We picked up our rental car in Belfast, and spent the last week of our honeymoon cruising around the Emerald Isle in a kind of counter-clockwise circle back to Dublin. In four days we made our way to Derry, Sligo, Galway and Cobh — quite a bit of driving, but we were free to stop and start whenever we pleased. Free to admire the quaint farmhouses and ancient stone towers dotting the countryside as we took an extended detour through the Blue Stack Mountains. Free to pause at the top of a narrow winding road overlooking the craggy Burren. Free to spend an afternoon meandering around the picture-perfect seaside town of Kinsale. It was the Ireland of my dreams, the endlessly verdant roller coaster of my imagination. But no fantasy of mine subsists on vistas alone; there must be food, and there must be drink. Continue reading
Just like that, we’re back. “Just like that” I mean half-sarcastically, because our connecting flight to Cleveland from Chicago was actually cancelled due to weather or aircraft maintenance or disgruntled employees. One of those things. But still, “just like that” is appropriate. Just like that, the past few weeks are a memory. We were somewhere we’ve never been before, and might never be again. That has always been a challenging idea for me to accept, and an even harder one to explain. So now I come to the really hard part – putting it all into words. Continue reading
Whew! We are ten days into our trip and the real adventure is just beginning. Today we picked up our rental car and drove to Derry/Londonderry by way of the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills. On one hand it seems like time is flying, but on the other hand this morning could have been days ago. I just wanted to share a few pictures, some food-related and some not, from our journey so far.
Well here we are at the Dublin airport, waiting for our flight to London. I meant to write a little something last week before we left but you know, between packing and visiting and figuring out cell phone service I just didn’t get a chance! It’s been quite a whirlwind since we got here too, but hopefully we are in the traveling groove now and I’ll have a little more time to write. No promises though! Continue reading
